Finance Career Paths Explained

Discover Diverse Career Opportunities Across the Main Finance Sectors

I began my career in PwC’s Transaction Services unit—an enriching experience that allowed me to work on numerous deals, strengthen my technical skills in Excel, accounting, and financial analysis, and, most importantly, evaluate the business strategies of a wide range of companies. Engaging directly with entrepreneurs and finance directors and asking in-depth questions about their businesses was truly invaluable.

In this video, we explore the top career paths in finance to consider.

Corporate Finance

Corporate finance roles are generally divided into two areas:

  • Financial accounting, where professionals ensure accurate financial records and compliance; and

  • Financial analysis, which supports internal decision-making.

Key roles include financial controllers and FP&A teams, responsible for forecasting revenues and costs. Career paths typically begin with financial analyst roles and can progress to finance manager, director, VP, or ultimately CFO.

Investment Banking

Investment banking offers fast-paced career progression, from associate to Managing Director. However, due to the industry’s intensity, many professionals later transition into private equity or venture capital roles.

Traditional Banking

Modern banking now extends beyond deposits and lending to include digital banking, foreign exchange, and wealth management. Within this space, risk analysts play a critical role in managing and mitigating bank exposures.

Financial Services and Consulting

Financial services and consulting firms support businesses with M&A, restructuring, and regulatory compliance. The industry is led by the “Big Four” firms—PwC, KPMG, EY, and Deloitte.
